Wes Slawson, Director "Find which way God is going and go that way!" For 28 years, God has led me to be a: youth pastor, teacher, short-term mission director, assistant pastor and now director of ATLAS of Walworth County. I really see the ministry as doing missions in my own back yard. Together with my wife of 26 years, Chris, we raised two boys. Brian (22) and Shawn (20) are off on their own now, but we talk or at least text daily. We really look forward to the rare times when we're together and laughter fills the house! A key Scripture verse for me is Philippians 2:1-4 - "If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." As our team and board earnestly seek God's direction for ATLAS of Walworth County, we actively seek to work with those who want "help up," not just a "hand out."
Larry Hansen, Mentor Coordinator and Lead Staff Mentor "... The LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners." Isaiah 61:1 I am passionate about setting people free - free from addictions, behaviors and destructive lifestyles. I believe that type of freedom comes through Christ and through Christ's hands - the believers in Christ! Since 1992, I've been serving in jail ministry at the Walworth County Jail in Elkhorn. What really inspires me are people who've made it through times of pain and bondage, then use those experiences to ease the pain of others. It's exciting to see those mentor/mentee relationships develop over time. Another connection I love to foster is getting people involved with their local church. Churches have such an important role in daily life! I've been married for 44 years to Barbara. In my first week here at ATLAS, Barbara even went through mentor training with me. That's part of living life together!
Elke Ingersoll, Staff Mentor One of my favorite quotes is: "Life is a journey, not a destination." As I look back on my life it is pretty clear that once you arrive in one place, the next place awaits you. And it's not so much about getting from place to place as it is what happens along the journey from place to place. I've experienced many deep dark valleys and wonderful mountain tops and some plateaus in between. Regardless, the one constant that makes me get out of bed every morning and keeps me moving forward everyday is my personal relationship with Christ. It is His fingerprints on every part of my journey that keeps me trusting Him and gives me hope that no matter what is around the corner that I cannot see... He will walk me through it. I think every one of us longs to have someone walk through life with us. The truth is that we actually need people to walk alongside us through the joys of life and especially through the painful times in life. That's what I love about Atlas. Atlas is all about coming alongside people who need someone to join them in their journey. Here in Walworth County, Atlas seeks to do the following: meet people where they are at in their journey, assess their need(s), be a resource to point them to the help available to them, come up with short & long term goals, and ultimately to hook them up with a mentor/friend who will be committed to walking side by side with them in their journey. Romans 15:13 says: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Board Members
